After class, Max was driven home by an enraged Billy, who attempted to drive Dustin's friends off the rode due to his anger at Max being late. The following day, Max was greeted by the two, who invited her to join them in trick-or-treating and to join their group of friends. She later went to the arcade after being dropped off by Billy, and was watched by Dustin and Lucas Sinclair, whom had fallen for her since she had beaten their high scores. When at school, Max noticed that a group of boys were stalking, and wrote a letter to tell the "creeps" to stop following her. She and Billy were not happy about the move.ĭuring her early stay in Hawkins, Max would visit the Palace arcade and beat the high scores of Dustin Henderson, which gained the latter and his friends' attention. Max and her family moved from California to Hawkins, Indiana after her mother officially remarried to Neil. Billy met Sam and decided to break his arm in order to show Max wasn't "easy going" likely in an attempt to be overprotective. When Neil beat Billy Max attempted to help Billy and give him ice although Billy lashed out at Max. Billy also sympathized with Max with how they both hated Neil. Billy was sometimes emotionally abusive to Max (it's unknown if he physically abused Max but it's unlikely) but he also was willing to teach her how to drive and Billy gave Max her nickname "Mad Max". Max developed a love-hate relationship with Billy. Susan and Neil were dating and planned to get married. In 1984, Max meet Neil and Billy Hargrove along with her mother. Max Mayfield was born in July 12th, 1971 to Sam and Susan Mayfield, and her mother would later go to marry an man named Neil Hargrove. After Vecna broke her limbs and nearly gouged out her eyes, Max was horrified and sobbed as she passed out in Lucas' arms, pleading that she wasn't ready to go. Max showed extraordinary courage as she was willing to risk her life to become Vecna's target again to give her friends a chance to kill him. However, when Lucas, Dustin and Steve play Max's favorite song while she is in Vecna's trance, Max finds comfort and strength in her memory of Lucas and her friends, allowing her to escape Vecna and a gruesome death. However, Max's grief and guilt leave her vulnerable to Vecna, who kills the Hawkins teenagers to open a portal to the Upward.Īfter experiencing her first vision and believing she was going to die, Max wrote goodbye letters to her friends and family and accepted her fate. Max harbors a grudge against her brother for the way she treated him, and when she and her friends discover he's been possessed by a mind-bender, she begins to care deeply for him. When Eleven asks for relationship advice, Max gleefully tells her what to do, using her previous breakup with Lucas as a reference. She is skeptical of the supernatural, but slowly comes to accept it. Max is friendlier and more loyal to her friends after moving to Hawkins and meeting new people. When she was finally accepted into the party, she was loyal to her new friends, seeing herself as "Zoomer" as her role on the team, and sided with Billy to protect them. She initially shrugged off Lucas and Dustin's attempts to befriend her, but eventually put up with their rough treatment in order to be included. She was initially antisocial and wary of other people, but once she accepted the gravity of the situation, she was ready to lend a helping hand. In 2021, she played the lead role in the short film All Too Well: The Short Film (2021).Max was a tomboy with many interests, including skateboarding, arcade games, and horror movies. She has since appeared in the films Chuck (2016), The Glass Castle (2017), and Eli (2019), and was one of the narrators for the documentary Dominion (2018). She also made guest appearances in the shows Blue Bloods (2010) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015). In 2015, she played Suzanne Ballard in the NBC television series American Odyssey (2015), and portrayed a young Queen Elizabeth II alongside Helen Mirren in the Broadway production of The Audience. While starring in the play, she appeared in the Emmy-winning series The Americans (2013). She then auditioned for Broadway, and played the title role as well as Duffy in the 2012 revival of Annie. She performed in musical productions of White Christmas in 2011, and the title role of Annie in a regional production. She began taking acting classes and performing in community theatre in Houston at age nine. She started her career in the theater, and rose to prominence for her roles as Max in Netflix's science fiction drama series Stranger Things (2016) and Ziggy Berman in the horror films Fear Street: Part Two - 1978 (2021) and Fear Street: Part Three - 1666 (2021).
